‘States of the Body’ is an exhibition that brings together four artists from different disciplines (dance, visual arts, poetry, archaeology and conservation) who work at various intersections between bodily experiences and drawing, documenting or at least manifesting fleeting moments of recognition in time. Drawing here is a practice of exploring (one’s own) body and putting ‘invisible’ experiences on paper (e.g: Eva Maria Lassnig or Alina Popa; the early works of Gerhard Rühm and Cy Twombly; or the work of Egyptologist Dorothy Eady). They are traces of intangible, experienced situations: Sensory impressions, self-observations and spatial experiences that, like body scans, illuminate layers of inner architecture and capture ephemera, such as movement, dance, dream or feeling, on paper. The drawings are snapshots and realisations of experience-based anatomy, physical states, inner experiences, memories and the unconscious, which testify to and document the processes in which the artists move and inspire them to create something new.
